Uglies

When the year 300 makes its way to the world, what do you think it would be like, how do you imagine the world will function? The Uglies is the first book of its series by Scott westerfields it takes place in 300 where until you were 16 you were considered ugly. On your 16th the specials take you to have the operation turning you into a “pretty” the surgery makes you beautiful and perfect with full lips great eyes and symmetrical body figure.  Everyone is identical and everyone dreams of being a pretty. Tally Youngblood is one of those uglies who cannot wait to move out of Uglieville. While tally is waiting for her birthday to come she meets another ugly shay, only shay does not wish to become a pretty like tally she wants to rebel and go to an outside group of people called the smoke. She tells tally the rumors of the smoke and tells her of her interest in going to it but tally disagrees. So shay leaves tally and runs away to the smoke. Before she leaves she leaves a note for tally that has clues on how to get to the smoke. When tally finally gets her chance to become pretty but she is told by Dr. Cable, a Special that she has to reveal where the smoke is located or she won’t become a pretty. Even after she promised shay she would keep it a secret she agreed to help Dr. Cable so she could become a pretty. She ventures out of the city limits and into the woods carefully following shays clues. After being with the smokes for a while she meets the leader, David and falls in love. The smoke informs her actually happens when you turn pretty. The surgery also creates lesions in the brain so that it makes the pretties more obedient with authority. Tally has a change in heart and decides to not help the specials destroy the smoke, but the specials find her and capture everyone but tally and David. Together they planned to get their friends back and were successful in doing so. They returned to the Rusty Ruins, a city from our today’s world. While being with the specials David’s dad had died and they operated on shay and she was pretty and had the lesions.  David’s mom had come up with a cure for the lesions, but shay refused to take them because they had not been tested and could possibly end in death. Tally risks herself to save her friend so she turned herself in to have the operation done and take the pills, the only thing is once your pretty your mind is not the same and convincing herself to take the pills is her next obstacle. Does she do it? To find out you have to read the second book of the series The Pretties. If you like the hunger games and if you are upset that the books end pick up this book and read it. It’s very similar and very good J

fast times

Oh the joy of cuddling with your mother on the couch and popping in a little blast from the past. If you have not had the chance I do recommend it. It makes for awesome therapy. Now although this movie made my mom feel a little old, we had fun comparing the generations. This movie is about a group of teens in high school looking for love, getting in trouble and yes I do dare to say it, smoke pot. The movie starts out with Stacy Hamilton (Jennifer Jason Leigh) a young innocent girl asking her older, sexually active friend, Linda Barrett (Phoebe Cates.) advice on guys and how to make a move on her new crush Mark Ratner (Brian Backer), but making a move on him doesn’t come so easily. She eventually throws herself at him making it clear what she wanted. Sooner or later she hooks up … with mark? (gasp!!!!) no with marks best friend who is more assured, Mike Damone (Robert Romanus). Meanwhile i know ya’ll are all curious about the pot smoking that goes on in this film so ill fill you in on the pot head character, Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn)spicoli who we all love is a stoned surfer dude who goes through life like it’s a breeze or puff? Now my favorite part of this movie would be the continuing quarrel with the history teacher at ridgemont high,Mr. Hand (Ray Walston). If enjoy doing those little things to get your teacher put this movie in and take notes from spicoli. Its a classic movie and worth the watch i promise. :)

Tiffany's calms me down right away

“Tiffany’s, calms me down right away”

I have to say I wanted to save this blog topic for last just because it is my absolute favorite movie ever. But I just could not wait! I love the style and the fashion. this movie is very classy and elegant, with still some if you will “riskay” hidden aspects. What’s the best part of the film? Audrey Hepburn! And of course George Pappard who is very handsome.

While new movies are being produced I prefer to relive the past in old classic films such as breakfast at tiffany’s . Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) first appears on screens in 1961. Audrey plays a clueless, naïve girl who lives her life without a care. When Holly is awaken by the new tenant Paul Varjak, (George Pappard) the writer, buzzing her apartment. He asks to use her phone and once in her apartment they have small talk and you get to know a little about how Holly lives her life. She tells him about her love for the jewelry story tiffany’s and that alone tells you that she has expensive taste. You see in this scene also that she has lived in her apartment for a year but not settled down. Throughout the movie she makes friends with Paul and he grows fond of her quirky and oblivious ways. One day the woman Paul is secretly involved with tells him that she is afraid that she was followed. He quickly goes out to investigate and meets a guy from Holly’s past. He tells Paul Where Holly is from and reveals himself as Holly’s husband Doc. and explains to Paul that he is here to bring Holly back home to Texas. At this point Paul discovers his own fondness of Holly and how much he would miss her. Holly tells Doc. That she is not going back and that she is a different person than she was before. After that was all said and done upset, Holly orders Paul to take her out and not bring her back until she is good and drunk. Paul helps holly back to her apartment, where she drunkenly admits her plans to marry a rich man for his money and Paul realizes what it is exactly that she wants; money and he is short of it. Holly gets arrested for obliviously passing codes for sally tomato a mafia guy in prison that ran drug deals. Holly spends the night in jail and released on bail. Paul picks her up with her cat, and gives her a letter that was at her door  that tells her how her fiancé does not want a wife with bad behavior and a prison record and must end their relationship. Holly tries to go to him anyway. Paul confesses to Holly that he is in love with her and she tells him that no one is going to put her in a cage and tries to run away from love. She tells the driver to pull over and throws cat out into the rain and leaves him. Paul tells the driver to pull over again and tells holly “ your chicken you’ve got no guts you’re afraid to stick out your chin and say ok life’s a fact people do fall in love people do belong to each other because that’s the only  chance anybody’s got for real happiness  you call yourself a free spirit, a wild thing and your terrified somebody’s going to stick you in a cage, well baby your already in that cage you built it yourself …its wherever you go because no matter where you run you just end up running into yourself. ” he tosses a ring engraved from tiffany’s into her lap. She runs after him and he helps her find the cat and they look into each other’s eyes and like any good romantic movie kiss in the rain.

"The shuddering inducing and cliched, however totally false account of how I lost my virginity to a guy at a community college. Let me just begin by saying there are two sides to every story, and this is my side, the right one."

The first time I saw this uproarious movie I absolutely loved Emma stones character, Olive.  I completely love her sarcasm and witty humor. I think the story touched perfectly on the ups and downs of high school life as well as life in general.  The movie starts out with olive desperately trying to get out of a camping trip with her best friend Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka) and her nicely put abnormal parents. She starts a little white lie saying she has a weekend date with an imaginary guy from a community college, and can't make the trip. That small lie took the high school course through the rumor mill and soon every one is talking about olive's adulteress ways, but instead of trying to stay below the radar, olive takes on the promiscuous role that the rumors make her out to be. She takes in all of the attention that the student body is giving her and uses it to help out mistreated and bullied students by having a pretend relationship with them. Her reputation to soon takes a downward spin to a new level of lewdness. The more she helps her classmates the more tangled she gets in the lies. Olive has to detangle her web on her own before her acuser, marinne (Amanda Bynes.) gets her expelled from school and all of her lies keeps her from her own happieness. Olive penderghast  the virgin student went from being anonymous to being the most depended on and the most hated girl in school. This movie plays lightly off of the book the scarlet letter... "now isn't that always the way, the books you read in class always have some strong connection with whatever antistatic drama that's going on...". the scarlet letter is a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorn and is about a girl, Hester prynne who is accused and harshly judged by her neighbors claiming her as an adulterer and is forced to wear an A on her attire for adultery. olive embraces this A and uses it to her advantage to make herself more known. "If google earth were a guy he couldnt find me if i was dressed up as a ten story building." I have to admit after watching this in theaters i bought it the very day it came out on dvd and watched it all the time. if you have missed out on watching easy A i highly recomend that you go to the nearest wallmart, or get on your netflix and buy it! thanks for reading!
